Sprinker Rec. Center scheduled to close in October | Public Spaces

Pierce County's only ice skating rink is on the verge of closing.

Sprinker Recreation Center was built in 1976, but it has deteriorated over the years.

"If you look at the roof it's so brown," ice skater Billie Edwards explains. "There's a bucket to catch all the water that falls on us."

It's gotten so bad, Sprinker is scheduled to shut down on October 31.

But all hope is not yet lost.

Although renovating Sprinker comes with a hefty price tag of more than $30 million, we're told the County Council will discuss funding options next month.

Sprinker supporters started a website and a Facebook page that's gained hundreds of members in just two weeks.
