Anti-gay church to protest Powell boys' memorial service

TACOMA, Wash. - A rabidly anti-gay church known for its loud protests is planning to picket Saturday's funeral for the two sons of missing mom Susan Powell, who died in a raging house fire Sunday.

Margie Phelps of the Topeka, Kan.-based Westboro Baptist Church sent out a tweet saying the church will attend the boys' memorial service as a protest against the pending legalization of gay marriage in Washington state.

The two boys, Charlie and Braden Powell, were killed Sunday in a gasoline-fueled house fire set by their father Josh Powell after they arrived for a supervised visit. Powell himself also died in the inferno.

Alina Powell, Josh Powell's sister, called the church's planned protest "a horrible, disdainful act that serves no purpose other than to continue the years-long objectification of those little boys."

In an email message, Alina Powell said:

Police discover dead body in Tacoma ravine

Tacoma police are trying to figure out how a woman died and why her body was in a ravine in the city's Salishan neighborhood.

Neighbors first discovered the woman on Tuesday at the bottom of a 60-foot ravine in a wooded area near South 38th Street and Portland Avenue.

Police and fire personnel responded to the scene and found the body of an adult female. There were no obvious signs of trauma, and police believe the body had been in the ravine for several days.

Police say transients are known to frequent the area.

The Pierce County Medical Examiners will conduct their portion of the investigation to identify the woman and the cause of death.

Correctional officer surrenders after lockdowns, standoff

Correctional officer surrenders after lockdowns, standoff

Police have taken into custody a man accused of triggering lockdowns at a school and a prison, as well as a tense standoff on Monday.

Department of Corrections spokesman Chad Lewis said trouble began shortly after a correctional officer at the Washington Corrections Center in Shelton finished his graveyard shift and headed home at approximately 6 a.m.

Later that morning, a family member of the officer called the prison and said the man had been involved in a fight at home, and may be headed to the prison.

The prison was immediately placed under lockdown, and armed guards were placed at its entrances as a precaution.

Meantime, a mother arrived at Skyline Elementary School to drop off her child. After seeing the scratches on the woman, school officials called police to report a domestic violence case, according to Tacoma police spokesman Det. Mark Fulghum. The school was placed under lockdown as a precaution.

Police came across the sought man's vehicle while patrolling the neighborhood. But the man refused to pull over as instructed by police, prompting a pursuit.

WSP seeking additional witnesses in Monday morning crash on Highway 16

The Washington State Patrol is seeking additional witnesses in an early Monday crash that killed one woman and injured two others, including a WSP trooper.

The five-vehicle crash occurred Monday morning around 5 a.m. near the Burnham Drive overpass on Highway 16.

A state trooper was parked on the right shoulder at the scene of prior collisions that were clear of the roadway. In the next three minutes, a westbound passenger car crashed off the right side of the highway and a westbound motorcyclist went down on the roadway. Another driver stopped behind the trooper vehicle on the shoulder to help. A westbound pickup truck traveled onto the shoulder and struck the rear of the good samaritan’s vehicle, forcing it ahead into the trooper, samaritan, the motorcycle operator, and the patrol car. The trooper and motorcyclist were injured and the person trying to help was killed.

One caller said he watched ice fall from the cables on to the bridge deck nearly missing a car.

Shortly after that caller a second caller reported the same thing.

Anyone driving across the bridge should be extra cautious as temperatures rise and ice begins to melt and fall.
