Vandals break into Proctor mailbox

A mailbox outside the Proctor post office was broken into over the weekend, by vandals who may have stolen mail.

USPS workers say the mailbox was pried open sometime between the last mail pickup on Saturday, and Sunday night. Some mail may have been stolen.

Customers who deposited checks or financial information in this box should contact recipients to make sure they are received.

If not, report it online under the "consumer awareness" and "mail theft" links.

Missing mail may also be reported in person by filling out a form inside the post office.

If you see suspicious activity around your mailbox or postal property, call the police and the Postal Inspectors at 1 (877) 876-2455.

The holiday season can provide extra opportunities for thieves looking to steal mail or or gifts. If you know you are expecting a package while you're away from home, ask the postal service to hold it at the station for pickup, or ask a neighbor to hold it for you. Packages are stolen from porches every year.
