Flash mob kicks off STAR Center opening

Just a quiet morning ribbon-cutting ... until the flash mobbers showed up!

Seattle-based flash mob group Mob the World showed up at the grand opening of Metro Parks' new STAR Center in South Tacoma this morning. Check them out on Facebook for information on upcoming mobs and how to get involved.

This is for Tacoma

Today we are in love with this brand-new, Tacoma-lovin' music video from Clemm Rishad.

Rishad is one half of Tacoma's own Platinum writing/production team the Writer's Block, best known for the Nicki Minaj song "Fly" featuring Rihanna.

Local drag queen vying for reality tv spot

Brian Daniel Peters has a plan.

He's going to use everything in his arsenal as "fierce and fabulous" alter ego "Mama Tits" to land himself a spot on the next season of RuPaul's Drag Race. Then, he's going to hit the world with his message.

"My whole goal ... is to shine a light here and help build the drag community and the queer community and just help everybody equally," said Peters.

Peters lives in Seattle, but performs regularly at downtown Tacoma's The Deltan Club, as well as various venues in Seattle.

He says he thinks he has the charisma to introduce the Northwest drag scene to the rest of the world, and at the same time, advocate for his community.

"The whole idea of Mama Tits is ... she’s a little motherly, she’s a little slutty and she’s a little bit of Betty Crocker all rolled in. She’s over the top and fun. She’s not trying to be a “lady” but she is an elegant diva that cares about her community and cares about the people in her community," says Peters.

Best of Tacoma Entertainment - Pete Kirkland

One of the best sounds you can hear on a Sunday night in downtown Tacoma is the soothing voice of Pete Kirkland.

A versatile, formidable performer, Pete Kirkland says his grandeur is due to his genuine nature. The leader of the six piece R&B band, In the Pocket is currently enjoying the best of many worlds; counseling empowerment, spiritual connections, artistic endeavors and life after cancer.

For about a year, Pete stepped in where Darren Motamedy left off and created a band he named In the Pocket Band. With four original members and two ‘borrowed’ members, together they have attracted a steady loyal group of supporters at the Tacoma Comedy Club where they perform every Sunday Night.

Pete’s career started at the age of 13 when he frequently played the drums and even earned $50 for his efforts. During the Vietnam era he sang for funerals of some of his friends returning home from the war. It was around this time that he discovered the power of music and his strength as a leader.

Oberhofer frontman on Letterman tonight

It's not every 20-something from Tacoma whose trip to Austin music festival South by Southwest involves being followed for 24 hours by a Wall Street Journal photographer.

Nor does the average Tacoma School of the Arts alumnus find himself performing on Late Night with David Letterman.

But such is the life of Brad Oberhofer, frontman for the Brooklyn-based band Oberhofer.

Over the past few years, Oberhofer has been featured in the Washington Post and the Wall Street Journal, performed at music festivals SXSW and Coachella, and more.

Friday, he was featured as the Guardian's "new band of the day."

New multiplex theater headed to Tacoma

New multiplex theater headed to Tacoma

Name one mainstream, mutli-screen movie theater located in Tacoma.

Can't do it, can you? The Galaxy Narrows is a tempting answer, but the theater lies just past inside those pesky University Place limits. The Regal Lakewood 15 also seems as though it should count, but is even less ambiguous - what with "Lakewood" in the name and all.

After that, Tacoma is the proud home to two independent theaters - the second-run Blue Mouse Theatre in Proctor, and the nonprofit, multiscreen Grand Cinema downtown.

In fact, Tacoma hasn't had a multiplex since the Galaxy Tacoma 6 moved out of its location on S. 23rd St. But that's all set to change over the course of the next few years, as  construction continues on the waterfront Point Ruston development.

Cinemark Holdings and Point Ruston, LLC announced today that the "mixed-use lifestyle center" dubbed "the Waterwalk at Point Ruston" will feature a Century Theatres 9-screen cinema.

The Waterwalk is still in early stages of development and construction, but the developers have high hopes and lofty goals.
