Happy Friday, Tacoma! It seems we've all recovered from New Year's and are ready for jam-packed weekend of fun. Here are just a few of the offerings around Tacoma this weekend.
Children's Museum of Tacoma grand opening - Saturday, Jan. 14, 11 a.m., S. 15th St. and Pacific Ave
The Children's Museum of Tacoma is opening Saturday morning in its eagerly anticipated new space on Pacific Ave downtown. Go check it out - the museum will be operating on a pay what you can system, and opens its doors at 11 a.m. to the public. We got to take a sneak peek last weekend - check out our photos here.
LET'S PLAY Sports and Fitness Fest - Saturday - Sunday, Jan. 14-15, Greater Tacoma Convention and Trade Center
LET’S PLAY! Sports and Fitness Fest is a two-day event hosted by Tacoma-Pierce County Sports Commission and the Tacoma Children's Museum for the purpose of bringing people together through sports. Let's Play! also partners with MultiCare Orthopedics and Sports Medicine Fleet Feet Sports and theYMCA to bring this one of a kind event to Tacoma that will be filled with opportunities for kids and adults to participate, educate, and compete in a variety of recreational sports, all in one place! Admission is free for children 12 and younger, and adults may enter for $5 or five non-perishable food items.
Party like it's 1941 - Saturday, Jan. 14, 1-4 p.m., Chalet Bowl
Celebrate the Grand Re-Opening of Chalet Bowl! Enjoy the new interior and exterior changes. Games will be $0.41, $4 shoes rental [2 game max]. Link redirects to TravelTacoma.com.
Comedy with Cathy Sorbo - Saturday, Jan. 14, 8:30 p.m.
Note: Both Saturday performances are benefit shows for the YWCA. One of the region's most seasoned performers, Cathy has been seen on Comedy Central, HBO, Showtime and MTV where she was made into a real-time animation for a weekly series. She has been featured at the Just For Laughs Festival in Montreal, the U.S. Comedy Arts Festival in Aspen and was the only American comedian chosen for the inaugural comedy festival in Cape Town, South Africa. Cathy's humorous take on Seattle current events can be heard on the air at AM 1090. She is also the sideline announcer for the Rat City Roller Girls roller derby league. She delivers candid female locker-room talk about motherhood, marriage, body hair, body parts and sordid fantasies about celebrities all with her signature cheerfulness she may even throw in a few numbers from her "Songs of Filth Revue."
Monster Jam - various times, Tacoma Dome
Check out the nastiest machines in motorsports when the U.S. Hot Rod Association's Monster Trucks roll into town. The event brings 10,000 pound, 1,500 horsepower U.S. Hot Rod Monster Trucks to do battle in a "Roundy round" racing format. Led by the legendary Grave Digger and other fan favorites, this class of metal-munching monster trucks is ready to tear up the track! These trucks employ the latest technology to provide a spectacle of rock and roar that's unequalled anywhere in the motor sports industry. Tickets rn $20-30.
